In middle-eastern Arkansas, the Arkansas River sits between the Ozark and Ouachita Mountain ranges. This area is named the Tri-Peaks region after three major peaks: Mount Magazine, Mount Nebo and Petit Jean Mountain. Eureka Springs, population 2,000, is an Ozark Mountains resort town with a European feel. The city became a premiere relaxation resort in the late 19th century when people visited the area seeking restorative water from the "Great Healing Spring." Most of the original Victorian architecture from this time is preserved and the entire downtown commercial district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A large musical, artistic and writing community adds an eclectic feel to the city.
