The brilliant colors of maple trees in autumn provide an eye-catching backdrop for the sparlking white markers at Fort Smith National Cemetery.
Many notables are buried here including General William O. Darby of Darby's Rangers fame; Union and Confederate soldiers, including three generals; and Hangin' Judge Isaac C. Parker.
Other national cemeteries in the state are at Fayetteville and Little Rock. The one at Fayetteville was established in 1867 for the remains of Union soldiers killed in the region. The 1868 cemetery in Little Rock has over 22,000 graves of veterans from the Civil War to the Gulf War.
