Description
Crossing a diverse portion of rural Arkansas, Pig Trail Scenic Byway meanders along timber covered mountains, rugged landscapes, and clear mountain streams. Watch for a variety of wildlife, colorful wildflowers and autumn foliage as you walk among the banks of a rushing river.
Pig Trail Scenic Byway owes its name to the wild pigs who carved paths through thick forest growth, creating trails that settlers later adopted. Get caught up in the rush of students, sports fans and other University of Arkansas supporters going to and from Fayetteville, home of the "Razorbacks." The mascot of this University can trace its roots back to the pigs that first made the area home. You'll feel a part of the community among rabid Razorback fans, wearing red hog hats and calling "woo-pig-sooee."
The Pig Trail runs through the Ozark National forest, which is known for its beauty of mixed foliage and beautiful scenery. The rugged Boston Mountains loom in the distance, inviting hikers to enjoy panoramic views of the area below. Hike through colorful flora and rugged terrain to catch a glimpse of a deer or other wildlife foraging through the fields. Picnic among the fiery golds and reds of autumn by the rushing waters of a waterfall . Spend springtime hiking along the winding trails in the area when the serviceberry, dogwood and redbud trees are in bloom.
The Pig Trail provides numerous recreational opportunities no matter what time of the year you go. Enjoy open fields and pastures, rugged cedar breaks and rocky bluffs or step out of your car to enjoy a fresh caught lunch of spotted bass or green sunfish at the Mulberry River. If fishing isn't your favorite activity, brave the rushing waters for a few hours of whitewater rafting or kayaking and afterward spend a night under leafy boughs while the rushing waters from the White River sooth you to sleep. Start off the next day with a hike along the Ozark Highlands Trail, and capture the widespread views beneath you with your camera.
Whether you are cheering along with a Razorback fan, or enjoying the cool breeze coming from the mountains, the Pig Trail Scenic Byway will impress you and encourage you to come back again and again.

Ozark National Forest (AR)
The Ozark National Forest covers 1.2 million acres, mostly in the Ozark Mountains of northern Arkansas. You'll find the tallest mountain in the State, Mount Magazine, and an incredible, living underground cave--Blanchard Springs Caverns.
Turner Bend (AR)
Right on the junction of the Mulberry River and Hwy 23, the Turner Bend Store serves as a cultural hub for the byway. Its walls covered in bits of local history, newspaper articles, and photos, it is a museum, store, and information booth all in one. Visitors to Turner Bend can find a wide array of services such as lodging and food, interpretive information, and canoe and kayak rentals. They can also purchase a variety of books or field guides pertaining to the history, fauna and flora of Arkansas. The store also acts as host to local events such as the White Rock 25k and 50k race.
