White River National Wildlife Refuge

White River National Wildlife Refuge

10,000-square-foot visitors center for the White River National Wildlife Refuge in east Arkansas. The $2.6 million facility houses a bookstore and an environmental education classroom. Exhibits cover such topics as an historic timeline of the area, fish and wildlife, bottomland hardwood forests, bears, and birds and migratory flyways. Long-range plans call for the development of more than two miles of trails around the center. Established in 1935 and covering some 160,000 acres along the lower White, the refuge is home to the nation's largest contiguous block of bottomland hardwood forest under single ownership.
