Fort Smith National Historic Site

Fort Smith National Historic Site

Located in downtown Fort Smith, the National Historic Site embraces the remains of two frontier forts and the courthouse and jails of the Federal Court for the Western District of Arkansas. The site also commemorates a significant phase of America's westward expansion and stands as a reminder of 80 turbulent years in the history of federal Indian policy.

Exhibits at the site include: Fort Smith's military history from 1817 to 1871; Federal Judge Isaac C. Parker; U.S. deputy marshals and outlaws; federal Indian policy; and Indian removal including the Trail of Tears.

Attractions also include the original "Hell on the Border" jail, located in the basement beneath the courthouse, which was used from 1871 to 1889.

The next floor of the building contains the "modern" jail, which was built in 1887-88. In the main exhibit area, a partial, full-sized replica of the 1890s jail interior has been built using the original historic blueprints. In addition, "Hanging Judge" Parker's courtroom has been restored with reproduction 1880s court furnishings.

The building's exterior has been restored to reflect its appearance circa 1891.
