Dining in Hope

Food has become such an integral part of traveling. "The specialties of the house" allow visitors a chance to experience their destination’s culture. Who can visit Arkansas without sampling barbecue, fried catfish or fried green tomatoes? There are just about as many difference choices of barbecue in The Natural State as there are trees in the Ouachita, Ozark and St. Francis National Forests. It can be hot or mild, tomato or mustard based. The pork or beef can be chopped or pulled. All you have to do is choose.

Poultry is another favorite which is no surprise. Arkansas leads the nation in poultry production. You can get it roasted, baked or fried. And don’t forget the ultimate comfort food—chicken and dumplings.

Arkansas isn’t limited to just barbecue and chicken though. Mediterranean, Oriental, French, Italian, Indian German and other ethnic cuisines are available almost statewide. Seafood including rainbow trout is plentiful on many menus as are other healthier choices. Homemade yeast rolls and cornbread make a tasty accompaniment as does a glass of iced tea or an Arkansas-made wine. Be sure to save room for dessert with luscious pies often the preferred choice. Fruit pies, cream pies and fried pies provide immediate taste gratification.

Whether it’s a Mom and Pop café or diner, or an award-winning upscale eatery, you’ll find it in Arkansas. Pictured here is Amigo Juan Mexican Cafe in Hope.
